design/ THE STORY
Overlooking the first and largest Peace Park, the Sky Garden Lounge extends Dearborn’s Park Equity and Access for Civil Engagement (PEACE) initiative into an elevated public realm experience. Designed to foster community through expanded access to green space, the Sky Garden Lounge reinterprets the open-air concept, quite literally lifting it above the urban ground plane.
Positioned atop an existing parking structure, the project introduces an unexpected moment of discovery within the city fabric. An urban Imagine arch anchors the composition, surrounded by lush Boxwood in metal planters that soften the architectural edges. These structured green elements transition into a geometric turf “rug,” layered with mounted artwork to reinforce the space’s identity as both landscape and gallery.
Scattered throughout the lounge are varied seating typologies designed for comfort and flexibility, including net seating, suspended swings, and integrated bench seating. Shaded zones are carefully distributed across the layout, allowing the space to function as a relaxed, elevated retreat for gathering, pause, and informal community interaction.
